Introduction
The BackupVault Pro client allows you to mount a virtual drive with ease using the InstantData service. This method allows you to access a full restore point as if it was in a regular mounted drive, but only downloading the data you require. You can use two methods when recovering via InstantData, Temporary or Permanent Access.
Initiate Temporary File Access from the Console
- Open the Management Console and login with your username and password.
- Right click on the name of the backup account you wish to restore and select InstantData, Open.
- Select Temporary File Access and click Launch.
- Enter the account Encryption Key.
- Select a restore point and drive letter, then click Mount.
- You will now have a temporary drive mounted in your computers filesystem. Check Windows Explorer for the drive letter you chose. You can access the data within the restore point now. This does not download any data unless you copy it out of the temporary drive. This does not alter data on the backup servers. Once you are done, ensure that no other programs are accessing the data, and unmount the drive as you would any other.
Initiate Permanent File Access
1. Opening InstantData
You can access InstantData from the ESE Agent by clicking on the InstantData icon under the Restore tab.
You can also access InstantData from your Storage Platform Console, select the most relevant method for you from the list below:
a. I have access to the Storage Platform Console /I am an Administrator
Click the InstantData icon to open the program.
If you are an Administrator, you will also have the option to share a link to provide access to InstantData with another user who does not have Console access or is unable to login. To share a link you'll need to right-click the Account you're restoring from and go to InstantData then Share
b. I have been sent an InstantData link by my Administrator
This is the simplest option as it require little input from you, just follow the link they've sent to download the InstantData program.
c. I don’t have Console access or an InstantData link (for technical users)
InstantData can also be downloaded externally via the appropriate web address for your Storage Platform/AccountServer.
To initiate this download, go to either of these links in your browser:
https://AccountServer name/WebLaunch.htm
Example: https://MyPlatform/WebLaunch.htm
http://AccountServer name:443/WebLaunch.htm
Example: http://MyPlatform:443/WebLaunch.htm
Note: The name of your AccountServer can be found in Options > Backup account in your ESE Agent.
2. Connect to the Account
Now that it's downloaded you can open the InstantData program and select Permanent File Recovery and click Launch.
Next, enter your security credentials.
Note: The Account details will already be filled in if you’re running the app from the Console, and you can leave them as they are.
3. Recovering your files
At this point a file browser window will open. To move the files you need to your PC/ Server, simply drag and drop them, or use right-click > Copy (or CTRL+C) and paste as you would with a typical Windows folder.
Note: If Full System Backup has not been selected on the Account, you will only see the files that were selected in the browser.
The restored files can be used immediately, regardless of their size as the program will prioritise any files you have attempted to open. The restoring of other files will continue in the background.
How to determine when a file has been fully restored:
- A confirmation notification will appear in your system tray once a file has been fully restored.
- There is a progress bar at the bottom left of the InstantData window.
- Should you miss the system tray notification you can click the History button in the InstantData window to view a full list of the files that have finished restoring.
4. After restoring has finished
You'll want to confirm that all your files have been restored and you have the data you need, then you can right-click the InstantData icon in the system tray and click Exit at which point the InstantData icon will be removed from your system tray.
Note: Any changes made to files restored via the InstantData backup browser window will remain after the InstantData program has been disconnected from the Account which differs from the Temporary File Access option, where file changes won't be kept by default.
