Introduction
The BackupVault Client is capable of backing up your OneDrive folder, so long as OneDrive is configured correctly. If you encounter issues with your OneDrive backup, read below for more information.
Symptom of problem
When trying to backup your OneDrive folder from the BackupVault Client you may find that certain files are skipped, showing the error “Cloud files are not supported“.
Cause of problem
This is because by default OneDrive files are not stored locally, and are actually just forwarding rules rather than real files, so the BackupVault Client cannot include them.
Steps to fix (Method 1)
- Right click the OneDrive icon in the system tray (Small blue cloud icon)
- Select “Settings”
- Under “Files on-demand” uncheck the box next to “Save space and download files as you use them”
Note: OneDrive will then download your cloud files and the backup client will be able to include them in your backups.
Steps to fix (Method 2)
If you aren’t concerned with backing up the Onedrive files the you can simply remove them from your backup selection.
- Open your backup Vault client and go to the Logs tab
- Select the log for the most recent backup and the click Summary, This will limit the log file to show only important messages such as errors
- Look through the log to find the file names and you should see something similar to the below
- ERROR : 22:29:48 Failed to add ‘C:\Users\John.Smith\OneDrive\Documents\Accounts\2022\records.xls’ (Cloud files are not supported)
- Repeat this method until you have determined where all of the files are stored and then move to the Backup Selection tab
- Navigate to the folder containing the files and Right click on it, then click Exclude (You can also exclude files individually if needed)
- This will prevent the files from being backed up and you won’t receive anymore error messages
